It’s fraking bonkers how much people will pay for a 1:64 racecar. The same can be said about real cars, I digress. It’s obvious that the 917 is my favorite racecar of all time. I have a newer release 917s, but when I found out there was an earlier release 917 with an ENGINE BAY, well...
As you can see, values for 917s is bonkers. But I found this complete and used 1970 Porsche 917 in Spectralflame Blue for an amazing $14.99+Shipping , and it comes with the rear engine cover too!!
With 14 other people watching this, I said F’it! And clicked ‘ Buy Now’. I can’t wait for it to arrive. This will be the diecast car that I completely restore and make my own. I was gonna do it with that Matchbox Ford GT, but this opportunity is too good to pass up.

Yeah original Redlines are pricey. Well-loved examples can still be found affordably though. I got a Mercedes 280SL for $10 and a Custom Continental Mark III for $15.
Fresh replacement wheels can also be had on eBay for a few bucks, they really make a big difference. I put them on the 280SL in that photo.
Oh and the 917 was recast in original opening engine bay form under The Hot Ones collection in 2011 and 2012. I got the yellow 2012 version (featured next to the little Micro Machines 917):

Wha??? They re-released it??? In all the 20 minutes of searching I did before buying this (as I did in the last hour) I couldn’t find any newer than 1970 online. Oh well. I’ve no problems owning another diecast older than me. And I get to make this one in my own image.

Hahahaha they’re more expensive than the Redline you bought!

That yellow one isn’t too far off, but I couldn’t customize a brand new one! I’m happy with this “Halloween” treat to myself.

Working on old Redlines is fun! I fixed up this Custom Fleetside back in 2016.
I believe I have a set of reproduction wheels that will work on your 917. If I can find them, they are yours.

I once got a redline car for just $1. It’s around here somewhere. I also was about to snag an original redlines mustang in spectraflame blue in a bag of cars for $20

The old redlines are awesome! And the 917 is definitely a favorite of mine, but you’re right the ones in good quality are quite pricey...
I managed to find a ‘77 release in excellent quality at an antique shop for like $15 once. I got super lucky. Looked like this one:

That’s awesome! The 917 is a great red line and this one looks in great shape! For redline restoration ideas check out the baremetalHW channel on Youtube, or just visit LaLD for customizing ideas and questions!

The opening engine bay is cool but the body lines just aren’t “right” enough for me. The 917K in the Porsche series though.....mmmmm

Most everyone is familiar with the 917K. Hardly anyone seems to remember the original K-69 version, which this one is.

Because that one didn’t have the aero needed to keep the beast on the track, and it was less successful because of it.

I feel like at some point I’ll do something extraordinarily stupid and buy the RLC Gulf 917k.

Been stored away until you reminded me :) I also have three of the spectraflame cars in green, antifreeze, and blue, but all missing the back glass piece. Paint similar to yours.
